Topical tretinoin is generally avoided during pregnancy. If you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or nursing, tell the dermatologist reviewing your case.

You should also disclose eczema, active irritation, sunburn, other prescription skin treatments, and any medications that may affect skin sensitivity.

Frequently asked questions

Can sensitive skin use tretinoin?

Often, yes. Sensitive skin is a reason to be more deliberate, not automatically a reason to rule tretinoin out. Lower strength, lower frequency, barrier support, and a slower ramp can improve tolerability. The dermatologist reviewing your case decides what is appropriate.

Can I use tretinoin with my retinol?

Usually there is little reason to stack an over-the-counter retinol on top of prescription tretinoin unless the dermatologist reviewing your case specifically tells you to. More retinoid exposure can simply mean more irritation.

What if I have darker skin or I am prone to hyperpigmentation?

Tretinoin can be effective across skin tones, including for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. But avoiding unnecessary irritation is especially important when your skin tends to leave pigment after inflammation. A controlled starting strength and good sun protection matter.

What about pregnancy or nursing?

Topical retinoids are generally recommended to be avoided during pregnancy. If you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or nursing, tell the dermatologist reviewing your case so the clinical team can guide you to an appropriate plan.
